Falcon Swim Alums Compete in College

Firestone swimming coach Cindy Virdo announced that three of her former athletes have committed to compete in a collegiate sport.
“Molly Chelovitz is going to swim at Cincinnati, Delaney Gasaway is going to swim at Notre Dame College and Michael Scantling is at the Naval Academy and he is going to row,” Virdo said.
Chelovitz, Gasaway and Scantling are 2018 graduates of Firestone.
Chelovitz competed individually in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke during her time at Firestone. She was a three-time Division I state qualifier. As a senior, she tied for sixth in the 50 freestyle (23.66 seconds) and was on the seventh-place 200 medley (1:45.41) and ninth-place 400 freestyle (3:32.75) relays at C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.
Gasaway competed individually in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke at Firestone.
“All three of these kids were leaders of the program,” Virdo said. “I know the best is yet to come for all three of them, especially the swimmers. I think Delaney and Molly will really find themselves in college and will have the opportunity to get even faster.
“With Michael, this is a whole new adventure for him. He has always had skills. Now he gets a chance to utilize them in a little bit different way.
“Michael comes from a great family with six kids. They have only one child left at home, which is James, who is going to be a junior at Firestone. You talk about a good family and good kids. All six of them are good kids. I have been fortunate to coach all of them through high school swimming — John, Clare, Annie, Katherine, Michael and James. Wow, what a great family.”
Virdo said two other recent Firestone graduates were on rowing teams in college — Clare Scantling at the University of Notre Dame and Peyton Rea at West Virginia.
