Principal's Message

Dear Falcon Families,

On behalf of the faculty and Academy partners and dedicated faculty members, I wish to extend to you and your family a heartfelt “Falcon” welcome to another exciting school year. We are in an unprecedented time in our history, everything has been impacted. While we are excited to welcome you and your learner (back) to our community, I am keenly aware of what our students have lost. During these uncertain times, our staff is dedicated to providing our students and families with a rigorous academic environment. As we prepare to open virtually this fall, we know there will be obstacles, frustration, successes, and blindspots. However, if I know anything about this community we ALWAYS figure it out #together.

This past spring we were thrown into education triage. Overnight we all had to learn how to navigate our new reality of virtual learning. We did our very best. And, like every great community we failed fast, experimented, and learned from our mistakes. We tried not to overwhelm families as we were dealing with the collateral damage of this pandemic; family illness, stress/anxiety, stay at home orders, and loss of employment. We quickly embraced the fact that school as we knew it would never be the same. Everyone had to become more flexible and considerate of our new reality.

Over the summer we have continued to learn and grow. We understand that we cannot continue to function and provide the kind of learning for our children the same way we did in the spring, simply logging in won’t be enough. This fall, our district is rolling out the second version of our remote learning platform - Connected Learning. Connected Learning 2.0 (CL2.0) is a collaborative effort and designed to provide our staff the professional development needed to deliver a high-quality learning experience and the expectations that students will follow a set schedule and complete assignments, assessments, advance their learning, and complete projects within a given timeframe. Daily attendance by your student is a requirement.

CL2.0 has six simple principles.

  1. A Safe Virtual Learning Environment - CL2.0 is specifically designed for teachers to build a genuine rapport with their students, connect instructional opportunities, and collaborate with parents to provide students with interactive, engaging activities and consistent robust feedback for student growth.
  2. Problem Solving - Connects students to real-world problems, relevant learning opportunities, authentic learning experiences based on our community. Student participation facilitates students’ development of persistence, grit, strategic thinking, flexibility, self-confidence, self-directedness, and creativity.
  3. Increased Engagement - Coaching sessions and Learning Labs are designed to empower students to take control of their learning, engage in projects, labs, and discussions, and provide choices for students to demonstrate what they know at a deeper level of understanding.
  4. Scaffolded Instruction & Feedback - Rich, robust, and consistent teacher feedback is critical for learning. This provides the best opportunity for a deeper understanding of complex content.
  5. High-Quality Assessment Practices - Standards-based aligned assessments with intentionally planned and flexible opportunities for students to meet synchronously and asynchronously for discussions, labs, and continued coaching.
  6. Professional Learning - Ongoing teacher professional development that will support these structures and allow teachers to continue to innovate and adapt their instructional strategies to provide the highest quality instruction for our students.

Our staff is delighted to partner with you and your child on this next part of their academic journey. Over the next few weeks, we will do everything in our power to support our families as we prepare to open the 2020-2021 school year. We are coordinating our information with district plans. Over the next few weeks, I hope to help transition you into a new school year with a soft roll out of information. If you want to get a jump start on preparing for the year, feel free to take a look at the Firestone Parent’s Guide to CL2.0. This guide directly aligns with our virtual framework and provides some tips for parents to start the year with.

In an effort to enjoy a smooth start to our school year, I have enclosed a few important reminders regarding this year’s staggered start, requirements for the first day of school, virtual Freshman Orientation, Academy Open House information and additional dates to add to your home calendar.

Student Schedules

The transition to your virtual scheduling will be an adjustment for everyone. The Sample Student Schedule and Worksheet provides families a sample of what the school day will look like. Using your schedule in HAC, complete the Student Schedule Worksheet with your student’s schedule; this is what your child’s day will look like. We are maximizing our A/B day schedule in the virtual format, meaning your child will have a total of 4 classes each day, alternating on an A/B day rotation. It is going to take some time for everyone to get comfortable, the best thing you can do is help your child implement some organizational strategies over the first two weeks of school. Make sure your child’s Chromebook is charged and ready for use on the first day of school.

Google Classroom is the learning platform that every one of your child's teachers will utilize. Your child’s Classroom will mirror his/her schedule. Before the first day of school please double check their classrooms to make sure they are attached to the teachers/classes on their schedule.
