Principal's Message

Dear Firestone Community,

Welcome to the start of the 2022-2023 school year.  It is a privilege to lead this talented staff and partner with our families to lead the learning for our scholars.  We are excited to meet all of our new Falcons and continue to facilitate the learning for our upperclassmen on their educational journeys.  This year, the staff have many innovative inquiry based units to prepare our scholars to be college and career ready.

For the 2022-2023 school year, we will still follow the A/B block schedule.  This year we will be returning to the breakfast door being Door 29.  Door 29 will open at 7:30 a.m. for scholars to get breakfast and/or wait in the cafeteria.  At 7:55 a.m., scholars will be able to enter door 1 and be dismissed to go to their classes.  The tardy bell will ring at 8:05.  All scholars entering class after 8:05 will be tardy to their first block.  We know there is a direct correlation between being in class and achievement.  We are here to help in any way we can to make sure Firestone is a safe and comfortable learning environment for all our scholars to thrive in.  If your scholar will be absent, please make sure to call the school to report the absence at 330.761.3270 by 9 A.M.  The day will end at 3:15 p.m.

Scholars will need to bring their chromebooks daily.   In the event that their chromebook is not working it should be reported to Mr. Taylor [email protected] or a teacher as soon as possible.  Students can submit a help ticket also on the APS Portal.  This year, APS will also be collecting fines for damaged and/or lost chromebooks.  The chromebook fine structure is available at the bottom of this letter and available here on the District website.

Building tours will be available on Thursday, August 25 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Our freshmen will join us for their first day on Monday, August 29 and all scholars will report on Tuesday, August 30.  Scholars will need to follow their assigned schedules.  If there are any questions or scheduling concerns, each counselor will have a form to fill out for scheduling requests during the first two weeks of school.

This year will highlight the academies of Firestone as well as our speciality programs of International Baccalaureate and the Akron School of the Arts.  We will be changing the format of interim nights slightly.  Our agendas will still provide informational sessions and chances to meet individually with teachers, but will also include showcases of the innovative projects the scholars are working on throughout the grading periods.

Our scholar handbook has been updated and is available at firestoneclc.akronschools.com.  It will explain many of the procedures here at Firestone CLC and list the activities available to our scholars and the advisors of the sports and clubs.  Firestone has many active clubs, sports teams and experiences and we hope all of our scholars will take advantage of the opportunity  to join.  We will be having an activities fair on Thursday, September 8th for our scholars to hear about the opportunities, and families will be able to explore this in the evening.  Please join us for our Open House on Thursday, September 8 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Enjoy the remainder of your summer and we look forward to seeing you all August 29th and 30th.  Thank you for selecting Firestone CLC to educate your scholar.  I look forward to serving this school and community and I cannot wait to be able to showcase the wonderful accomplishments of this year.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact me, your child’s Academy Principal or the main office.

Sincerely,

Tina Loughry
