Students aid Red Cross' efforts
Children
Akron Public Schools collected funds on behalf of the American Red Cross for victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma through Sept. 20. Shown above are some of the 80-plus students at Resnik Community Learning Center with one of the collection jars picked up by American Red Cross officials that day.
Lori Wammes, the International Baccalaureate coordinator at the school, said as part of its program efforts, students were encouraged to earn the funds they would donate to the effort by doing chores such as dusting, weeding, selling lemonade, having yard sales, doing chores to help family members and more. Students also discussed what victims would need and how those around the world, including the students, could help. Activities included reading the children’s book “The Dot,” by Peter Reynolds, and students were encouraged to make their mark on the world by making it a better place through creating solutions. They earned dots for their efforts that were displayed on school windows. These are shown behind the students in the photo.
