East wins rematch with Buchtel

The City football championship was decided on Thursday night at InfoCision Stadium. Buchtel and East played for the second time in what proved to be another epic battle. Regular season champion Buchtel came out ready and scored to take an early 7-0 lead. East took advantage of an early Buchtel fumble scoring from 82 yards away on the return TD.

The Griffs battled back scoring on a 25 yard touchdown pass from Mychael Leno to Zion Robinson with only nine seconds left in the half. Trailing the Griffs 14-7, the Dragons scored on only three plays with Devanier Floyd taking it in from 45 yards out to tie the score at 14. The fourt quarter had plenty of defense from both teams. The East defense forced a fumble from Leno which found its way to the end zone where the East defense recovered for the touchdown to take a 21-14 lead.

The Griffs showed their grit by coming back on only three plays to score a 26 yd touchdown pass again to Zion Robinson. Senior kicker Devin West who propelled the Griffs to big wins over Mooney and East earlier in the year was wide left on the extra point making the score 21-20. East recovered the onside kick to seal the victory.

Prior to the game, the All City team and special ceremonies took place. Dierre Blash was awarded Defensive Player of the Year and Devanier Floyd from East took home the Offensive Player of the Year.

Buchtel coach Ricky Powers was named Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches. Former North coach and longtime APS administrator Charlie Marques was the guest coin tosser for the game. Coach Marques helped Nick Pacitti the referee for the game who is retiring after 40 years of service flip the coin to begin the night.

APS Coordinator of Athletics Joe Vassalotti presented Nick with a plaque dedicated to his fine 40 year career. Congratulations to both teams and all the great people who support our teams and make the Championship terrific.
